The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Lesson Focus:  to participate in group discussions in order to get information from the text being read
Materials/Equipment Needed:  wireless laptops, one for each student and connected to the Internet website with story of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, by Beatrix Potter math, reading comprehension, sequencing, and true/false activity pages student teamwork score sheets teacher check sheets

  The students will:

(1)   Go online and read a portion of the story: http://olp.swlauriersb.qc.ca/webquest/peterrabbit/petertortoisehare.htm

(2)   The students will answer questions about the story using a handout printed from the website.

(3)   The students will be asked to share their responses with the class.

(4)   The students will evaluate their groups’ participation using the supplied rubric.

• Have special needs and LEP students pair up with other students for help as is needed.

• The teachers will introduce the lesson by explaining that a laptop will be handed out to each student.  Instructions, rules, and safety precautions for laptop use will be discussed.
• The laptops will be distributed to each student.

• The teachers will instruct the students on how to access the story online.
• The students will be assigned a page of the story to read aloud.
• Time will be given for the students to partner up and practice reading their page to each other before they begin.
• The teachers will also pass out the handouts to the students at this time.

• After the reading the students will be broken up into groups to answer their questions.

• The teachers will model reading the story by reading the first and the last page of the story.

• The teachers will model how to use the teamwork score sheet.

• The teacher will be able to assess how well the students understood the story by the answers give during the discussion.

• At this time the teacher could also ask other questions pertaining to the story:

                What would you do if you were Peter?

                How do you think the farmer felt about Peter Rabbit?

• The teacher and students will read the story out loud. 
• After the questions are answered the class will discuss the answers to their questions. 
• The teacher will moderate the question/answer discussion.

• After the reading the students will break up into groups to answer their questions.

• Talk about: Who was right? Peter Rabbit or the farmer?  Why?  Have a class discussion on the answers given.
