From my
experience with students, motivating them to claim their role in
learning has proven to be very challenging. I have discovered
that I must reach them before I can teach them. When a student
is hungry or sleepy, the Math lesson that I am introducing to
him/her is not going to stick. When a student is afraid of
something or worried about someone, my History lesson is not
going to be remembered. Taking the time to explore the present
and the past of my students will help me to identify some of
their physiological, emotional, and social needs. When these
needs are addressed and satisfied, then teaching and learning
will take place.
