The most basic social unit of the Apache tribes consist of father, mother, children, married children, spouses and grandparents. Usually several close knit families would form a band in which they live and hunt together. The most important man identified by the band was the bands leader or chief. The Apache Indians had many religious beliefs and acknowledged a supreme god. They also feared ghosts of the dead because they believed that the dead spirits wanted their relatives to join them in the afterlife. The Apache men wore breechcloths and moccasins. The Apache women wore knee-length animal skin skirts. In the 19th century the Apache women began to wear blouses as well. The Apache dwellings consisted mostly of buffalo hide tipis. |
