Position Statement “Just Do It” Don’t take short cuts… To become a “highly qualified” teacher, we feel you need a “highly qualified” education. Otherwise we are cheating our children of their education and their education is the future. In our opinion, we feel that by ending the education major for elementary and middle school teachers, as proposed by the National Alliance of Business, we will be cheating our children out of a “whole child” oriented education [http://www.ncrel.org/tech/renew/index.html] Our children need a teaching environment that allows them to learn at their developmental level; this may not always happen with alternative certification teachers. On the issue of alternative certification, we feel it does not always take into account the necessity to teach all subjects, including technology, in a developmentally appropriate style that best suits the “whole child’s” needs. In the case of technology, a good teacher needs to be able to demonstrate how technology is used within the subject, without directly teaching technology. The alternative certification program does not always include the in-depth education format of integrating technology into the required classroom curriculum. This is clearly mandated in the NCLB technology initiatives [http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/os/technology/inits_current.html].
