An Electronic Textbook
on Instructional Technology
(ET-IT) CD-ROM

Windows Version

The purpose of this CD is to provide an interactive hypertext and multimedia instructional package which will support the preservice teachers’ exploration of the use of technology in education.  The electronic package developed in this study is named “An Electronic Textbook on Instructional Technology.” This CD contains over 200 megabytes of files. The developers at the University of Houston evaluated over 10 gigabytes of material and selected the "best 200 meg" for inclusion on this CD.

Types of Files on the CD

We have placed two types of material on the CD:

Documents

This is the place where the content or the pages of the electronic textbook  is located.  All the files are either in the HTML document format or one of  the graphic formats such as GIF or JPG.

Users may start reading the electronic textbook through Netscape browser.  If your computer does not have Netscape already installed, a copy of the Communicator version 4.01 for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 are also provided in this CD. Locate the cp16e401.exe (for Windows3.1)     cp32e401.exe  (for Windows95)  through File Manager or Windows Explorer. Click on the file name and follow the instructions to install Netscape Communicator onto your computer.

Once the Netscape Communicator is up and running, locate the major file included in the CD called ebook.htm.  The ebook.htm  is the starting point for your journey to the Learning City.

As for the location of the above mentioned demonstration software, commercial trial programs, and shareware which are used to illustrate different classroom activities, please read the following section.

Programs

In the folder named Programs there is a collection of software. Some of the software is shareware, some is in the public domain and some are demonstrations of commercial programs.

There are many types of programs on the CD, and we have organized them into folders by alphabetical order to help you explore and evaluate them. Try out the shareware programs, but remember that if you decide to use the shareware, you have to register the program with the author and pay a small fee for continued use. Click here to learn more about shareware. Some of the shareware programs on this CD have a manual with them you can print out yourself. Programs in the public domain have been donated to the public so that you can use them or make copies for others to use without paying a fee. The commercial demos allow you to try out programs before you buy them. Some of the commercial demos are fully functional yet some take off some features, and therefore, for example, users may not save or run part of the modules. Some even do not allow for user interaction.

How the Programs on the CD are Organized

Using the CD

Some shareware and demonstration software in ET-IT cac be run directly off the CD-ROM, while some others require you to install them on your computer's hard drive. ET-IT has tried to provide instructions on how to run/ install the shareware and demonstration programs. Included in most program folders are also Read Me files written by the programs' authors. These informative files usually tell you the minimum system requirements, whether you need to create a new subdirectory, how to install the program, disk space needed, and other important information. Follow the instruction given in the Read Me files.

Click here to know more about  installation.

Some Cautions and Picky Details

The demonstration programs and shareware provided here are for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 platforms only.

Some programs run only if copied to the hard drive. Some require specific operating platforms such as Windows 3.1 only or Windows 95 only. Therefore, for example, if you are running Windows 3.1, you may not be able to run the Windows 95 only software. Some others have specific hardware requirements, such as color monitors, sound cards, and RAM. All of this information can be found in the Read Me files inside of each folder.

External links are active, of course, only if the computer running ET-IT has a web connection.  Internal links work whether there is a web connection or not.
