Student Case Study

Case Study Findings  based on  Technology TEKS

                  Synopsis of Findings

I observed “Theodore Roosevelt”, a randomly chosen student in my SBTE’s classroom, on four different days during math and language arts centers.  Each observation was approximately fifteen minutes long for a total of one hour of observation.

Teddy exhibited an age-appropriate understanding of the technology foundations except for the terminology of technology and using word document programs.  He knew many concepts but did not know the names for those concepts.  The notepad program was a total shock when he opened it accidentally.  Instruction for this student should focus on building technological vocabulary and use of word processing programs.  He possesses the background skills but seems to need more explicit instruction in these areas.

In the area of information acquisition, Teddy is especially weak.  He does not seem to understand or want to use this potential function of technology.  This student needs extensive instruction and future assessments in this area.  Instruction might start with a teacher lead activity to research a class chosen topic and then lead into students conducting their own small group searches.

Teddy is also weak in the solving problems area of technology.  He seems to be dabbling in this area but is far from mastery.  Instruction needs to focus on using technology to solve problems to best help Teddy in this area.  He should be given prompts or the freedom to explore self-posed problems that challenge him to develop in this area.

Communication is a strong area for Teddy.  He created bright, thoughtful monitor displays.  Instruction in this area should be geared towards self-analysis by the student.  He knows how to create products that communicate but needs to work on critically evaluating those products.

Overall, Teddy demonstrated many strong skills.  He has many new things to learn this year but he is building on a solid foundation and should be right on target in time for the third grade.
