In a sixth grade, English/Language Arts classroom, I would teach a unit over a particular endangered species: the Golden Lion Tamarin (which is a small, squirrel-sized monkey). I chose this topic for my unit because it is good to get students involved with issues that our world faces and endangered species is just one of many that I could do a unit over. Also, currently at the Houston Zoo is a free-range program for the Golden Lion Tamarins. These monkeys are roaming free around the zoo's premises. Volunteers and workers are observing these animals to gain more information on this species in order to promote the awareness of this endangered animal. If you visit the zoo you will be able to get up close and personal with the Tamarins, although no physical contact is allowed. If I were able to teach this lesson during the time of the free-range program, that would be really great.
Below are two of my unit creations. The first one is my final draft and is the second is my rough draft from which I started everything. Golden Lion Tamarin: Endangered Species Unit
