Independent Project

For my independent project I chose to create a PowerPoint presentation using a pre-written story.  I had the option of working with a group of kindergarten and first grade students to teach them how to use clipart or the option to create a PowerPoint for their use.  I chose the PowerPoint project because I enjoy using this program and I love working with computers.  I also enjoy working with children but I felt this was more suitable for me.

The story "Crazy Clown" was written by a group of local high school students.  The story was designed for grades K-1 at the charter school located on our UH campus.  Since we technology students are learning how to be teachers who integrate technology into the classroom, this was an opportunity for us to work on a project relating to our studies.

The PowerPoint I created is simple in nature.  The K-1 students will learn how to insert clipart graphics into the PowerPoint to make it into a storybook.  That is why there are no graphics in the PowerPoint.  Also, I chose a simple background that is easy on the eyes and that allows for nearly any clipart to look nice when placed on it.  I also chose the same slide transition scheme for the entire presentation in order to give it more of a "storybook" effect (i.e. The pages of a book are always turned in the same manner.).

I also created a noun reference handout page in Word.  This sheet is a graphic depiction of some of the nouns in the story.  Not all students can read and some may have trouble with the meanings of words and with this sheet they can look at a noun to see a picture of it, thus clarifying the meaning.  Obviously there are more nouns in the story than there are on the handout but I chose the nouns that can be appropriately and easily shown by a clipart graphic.

You will also notice a speaker icon located on every page.  By clicking on the icon you will hear me narrate that page.  This is for the students who are not yet readers or for those who struggle with reading.
