Unit Plan

Poetry Unit Plan

Objective: Students will be able to apply and show knowledge of poetry terms and structure by composing their own poetry.

Assessment: Ongoing assessment will be used while students write poetry to keep them on track. Students will eventually construct an anthology of their poetry. The anthology will be assessed as a portfolio by using a rubric after the entire six week poetry unit.

During this unit, students will be introduced to poetry. The students will be taught poetry patterns to assist them in writing their poetry in the beginning phases of the unit. We will also be reading and listening to poems. This will help students see and hear what a good poem sounds and looks like. They will use these poems as a way to brainstorm ideas and lead them into writing their own poetry. The teacher will also discuss different themes and words associated with poetry throughout the unit. It is important when discussing poetry to discuss topics that important to the students. Let the students know when they write they need not be afraid of expressing their opinions and feelings. It would be a great idea for the teacher to also write poems to show to the class. It is of great comfort to students if someone else is not afraid to show their feelings and words.
